Introducing the Wound Care Specialty Education Home Study Program

 

 

A Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Society  (WOCN)

fully accredited Wound Care Specialty education home study course that encompasses the nursing management of complex wounds, fistulas and tube management.

The Program is presented in one module that focuses on comprehensive Wound

Care Theory and Role Implementation Theory.  Upon completion of the home study course theory, the student is required to complete a sixty (60) hour clinical practicum with an appropriately credentialed preceptor.

Upon fulfillment of the clinical requirement, the student graduates as a Wound Care Nurse and is eligible to take the National Board Certification Examination. Upon passing the exam, the graduate is credentialed as a Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN).


Faculty

Faculty includes two program co-directors and a director of education.

Preceptor Information

Clinical preceptor must meet the WOCN accreditation criteria for clinical faculty. The staff at WEA is available to assist the students in selecting a preceptor.

A contract must be signed by the preceptor's employer and WEA, Inc. Ample time should be allowed for contract preparation and negotiation.

Students must generally pay a fee for the clinical preceptorship. The cost is negotiated between the student and the preceptor and is the student's responsibility.

Textbook Fee

The required textbook for the Wound Care Specialty Course : Bryant, R.A., Nix, Denise P. (3rd Ed.), Acute & Chronic Wounds: Current Management. Concepts, St. Louis, Missouri: Mosby, Inc.  ( ISBN: 0-323-03074-2)

This textbook may be purchased either new or used at a cost of between $55-$65.

Students are responsible for purchasing the required WOCN

Tuition Fees

Tuition for the course theory is $3,000. There is a $75 application fee to be remitted when making application to the program. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted.

Graduates of the Wound Care Specialty Course to the Full-Scope program:  Continuance in the WOC Program On Site or Home Study

  • Home Study - Completion of 2 more modules:

                Ostomies GI /GU

                Incontinence

  • On-Site - Attend two weeks completion of Incontinence and GI/ GU
  • The course completion time is six months
  • Following completion of the Home Study or On-Site course work, the

          student would advance to the 100 hour clinical practicum with an

          approved preceptor.

  • Clincal Preceptors must meet WOCN accreditation criteria for clinical faculty.
  • The additional cost for the Home Study / On-Site portion would be $500

           per module /week. Payment needs to be received before the first module

           will be sent out or the first day of class.

         

     

Admission Requirements

  • Licensed Registered Nurse with one year of RN clinical nursing experience following RN licensure
  • Baccalaureate degree or higher degree with a major in nursing, OR RN with a Bachelor's Degree in another field.
  • One year clinical experience as a registered nurse within the past five years.
